In the southern central area of Vietnam, on the coast of the East Sea, lies the World Heritage town of Hoi An.

 

Dating back to the 15th Century, its eclectic mix of architectureal styles bare testament to its illustrious past as a flourishing trading port. The town was at various times during its history, home to the Champa people, the Chinese, Japanese, Dutch and Indians, who all brought their individual cultures, which is reflected in Hoi An’s rich heritage. The town’s demise as a trading port was brought about during the late 18th century, due to political upheavals.

 

Hoi An is now an important tourist destination, not only from the historical aspect, but also for its ceramics, textiles, handicrafts and its colourful handmade lanterns.

 

Of particular interest is the unique Japanese covered bridge, with adjoining Buddhist pagoda. The various museums hold a rare store of historical artefacts.

 

For those seeking a break from all the culture, just a short distance from the town is the pristine stretch of golden sand on Cua Dai beach. Just perfect for relaxing in one of the sumptuous resort!
